How Trauma-Informed Coaching Changed My Life

pink roses and oracle cards ready to journal

For a long time, I thought stress and exhaustion were just how life is.

I was constantly pushing through, overriding my body, telling myself to be stronger, more resilient, more productive.

Living with fibromyalgia meant daily pain, and tiredness which never reduced. I relied on strong painkillers just to get through the day. Stressful situations would knock me completely off balance, and even small things could feel overwhelming. I didn’t realise how much chronic tension I was carrying.

Then I found trauma-informed coaching.

And everything began to change.

This wasn’t about fixing myself or “thinking positively.” It was about learning how my nervous system worked, how my body had learned to survive, and how to gently bring safety back online, from the inside out.

What Is Trauma-Informed Coaching?

Trauma-informed coaching begins with one core truth: your responses make sense.

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” it asks,“What happened, and how did my system learn to adapt?”

This kind of coaching understands that trauma isn’t just about big, obvious events. It can also show up as chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, carrying tension in the body for years, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or simply trying to survive in a world that asks too much of you. Trauma lives in the nervous system and the body, not just the mind.

In trauma-informed coaching, the focus is on safety, regulation, and choice.

Rather than pushing for change through willpower, we work gently with the body. We learn to recognise nervous system states, notice signals of overwhelm early, and respond with compassion instead of force. Somatic practices, breath, pacing, boundaries, and resourcing become tools for everyday life.

There is no rushing. No “fixing.” No reliving trauma.

How It Changed My Day-to-Day Life

Slowly, consistently, things shifted.

I have more energy now.

My fibromyalgia symptoms have reduced so much that I’m no longer taking the “big guns” painkillers I once needed. My body isn’t fighting itself the way it used to.

Stressful situations don’t knock me off balance. They still happen- life hasn’t magically become calm, but my nervous system has more capacity. I can stay present. I can breathe.

And yes, triggers still happen. I’m human. But now I have tools. Nervous system tools. Somatic tools. Gentle practices that help me come back to myself instead of spiralling or shutting down.

That’s why I say this was more than coaching.

It was life-changing.

A Different Way Is Possible

If overwhelm, chronic tension, or exhaustion feel like your “normal”, there is another way.

Trauma-informed coaching doesn’t promise a perfect life. What it offers is capacity, softness, and resilience that comes from safety.

I’m living proof that when the nervous system feels safe, the body can soften, energy can return, and life can feel more expansive again.

You’re not broken.Your body has been protecting you.And with the right support, healing is possible.
